II/III

II/III

ARTIST BIO

II/III (Two Out Of Three) is an electro-acoustic dark ambiental duo, featuring harpist rouge-ah (Urška Preis) and producer Nitz (Tine Vrabič). They have paved a relatively desolate field of the aforementioned genre in their native Slovenia and opened up a space for a new generation of regional sound makers. In their music, they interweave processed field recordings with effected electric harp sounds, create impactful beats out of self-made/recorded samples and altogether make you wonder about the origin of their imaginative sounds. Likewise, their live performances take you on phantasmal road trips all the way from spacious, unworldly drones, through luminous arpeggios and glissandos, to tense synth pads. Their cosmic performances have been labeled theatrical with a reason – to tell a wholesome story with precise dramaturgy is this duo’s ultimate goal.

With Urška bringing in years of classical education, followed by numerous author projects, collaborations, and band activities, and Tine being a pillar of the local electronic music scene, they merge their decade-long friendship into a mind-bending musical experience. They have proven it time and again through their critically-acclaimed debut EP It could be paradise and performing at ultimately all notable venues and festivals and various events at autonomous spaces of their home country.

II/III is currently exploring materials for their upcoming album debut, with topics such as the fragility of memories, interpretations as interventions, and duality of loud- and quietness.

Katie Drover

Katie Drover

ARTIST BIO

DJing is as much an art form, as it is entertainment; finding the right records to move the dancefloor is one thing but giving audiences something to take away from the experience is quite another. Katie Drover knows how to take people to that next level injecting her performances with a captivating energy and passion that’s made her an immediate standout wherever she plays.

A prodigious musical talent, Drover immersed herself in music from an early age, playing piano and saxophone and having a strong passion for classical music, jazz and blues. Katie’s insatiable musical hunger meant she’d soon discover a liking for Lounge, Trip Hop and Acid Jazz, revelling in the likes of Tricky and downbeat 90s masters Portishead and Massive Attack.

From the time she was 16 years old, Drover’s desire to have her own proper slice of the dance music action led her to sneak into dance clubs and illegal raves where she was able to see how DJs controlled dancefloors and she was instantly fascinated by the energy in these rooms.

With a natural flair for blending a divergent array of sounds into one seamless flow, Katie’s impact was instantaneous. Encompassing the full breadth of the house genre – from minimal, deep, to disco and electro – she’d drop it all, drawing influence from everyone from Billie Holiday and Nils Frahm to Matthew Herbert and DBX.

A favourite amongst Melbourne’s punters, Katie held an enviable list of residencies, knocking out the goods at the most well-known clubs in the city. Her ever-growing popularity also ensured she was able to travel to interstate and international parties ensuring she has the dancefloor’s seal of approval. Now she resides in Berlin where she has monthly residencies at Watergate and Golden Gate and plays regularly in the city known for its diverse record spinning talent.

An artist whose passion for dance music spreads far and wide, Katie has also hosted and been a guest on multiple radio shows including Triple J and Kiss FM, has taught classes on DJing and production and also runs her own record label Dokutoku Records which has showcased artists like Tom Ellis, Alexkid and Gullaume & the Coutu Dumonts. Add to that her recent string of elegant productions on Lobster Theremin, Pleasure Zone, Carpet & Snares, and on her own imprint few, would disagree that the sky’s the limit for Katie Drover.

Shōen

Shōen

BIO

Originally from Geneva, Shōen has made his home in the rugged terrain of the south of France, where waterfalls cascade from the mountains and rivers etch their way through deep ravines. This lived experience – away from the crowd and grounded in an instinctive connection with the elements – is something he brings into his musical practice.

Drawing inspiration from the dreams elicited by those surroundings, he uses ambient music to transport the listener to a different plane – a limitless domain away from external pressures, where each person is given the space to let their imagination take flight. For Shōen, then, ambience is not merely a backdrop against which our messy lives take place; rather, it’s a stage on which the multiple aspects of our identities can come together and find harmony.

Shōen develops these themes across multiple creative projects. In the studio, he works with a hybrid modular setup, making new recordings every day as the raw material for sampling and arrangement. On the radio, he has regular guests on his long-running Piñata Radio show ‘Cosmic Connexion’, a beacon for the ambient scene in Montpellier of which he is very proud. Finally, there is rich overlap, too, with his practice of hypnotherapy and meditation.

Pluies

PLUIES

Artist bio

The PLUIES project by Belgian-Hungarian artist Pauline Mikó is a sound and performative
project that aims to strengthen the relationship between plants, nature and the human being. Through a system of sensors and electrodes connected to the leaves of the plants and the body of the artist, the bio-electric exchange set up is transformed into sound, thanks to a modular synthesizer. The sound waves are then modulated to produce music, both for the ears of the spectators but also for the plants themselves. This system of electrodes, created by the artist, allows the expression of the energies of 11 different plants simultaneously.

By mixing nature and technology, Pauline Mikó offers us an original and sensory experience. The artist tries to give back a legitimate place to plants in our urban lives. By enhancing our connection to our environment, the idea is to become aware of its fragility and the importance of respecting it. The main intention of the artist is to put life back in the center of our communities and allowing a dialogue with Nature.

Nies

Nies

Artist bio

Nies is the creative alias of Denise Pakes, the founder of the Rotate imprint and co-founder of the Rings of Neptune agency & kōrero. Originally from the Netherlands, Denise can be found juggling between Paris and Berlin, engaged continuously in musical exploration, audio-visual collaborations with like-minded artists, and organizing events with cultural activation in mind.

After studying ‘Image & Sound’ at the Art Academy & Conservatory of The Hague, Denise became increasingly interested in the ever-expanding audio-visual universe and its peculiarities. Persistently curious and relentlessly passionate in video, photography, and music, she found the natural outlets for her artistic expression, which led her to create her label and agency, explore the art of DJing, and produce both video and music. She just finished a master’s study at INA GRM in Paris.

Since falling in love with synthesizers a few years ago, music creation is now one of her main creative outputs and an infinite source of inspiration and joy. Warm soundscapes, strange textures, subtle atmospheres, and broad bass lines — her musical intentions either as a DJ or as a music producer are clear: to excite the listeners through an excellent curation of tracks, flowing organically, stretching time and bending space in pure harmony.

Ethan McNamara

Ethan McNamara

Artist bio

Ethan McNamara’s approach to DJing sits somewhere between futuristic drama and introspective after party groove. When he’s behind the decks, you’re just as likely to find yourself getting lost in electrifying 90s techno as you are hearing an impossible-to-find edit of an 80’s synth or EBM record. It’s no surprise that the Leeds-based DJ’s calendar is growing to match his skills, including a string of recent dates across the UK and Europe, supporting some of the worlds best underground DJs.

When Ethan joined Mugpie in 2015, he increased the focus on cutting edge sounds as the brand grew into one of the preeminent nights for all things deep in the north of England. Ethan’s crates sit up there with the best of them, with a collection as singular as it is varied, thanks to his nearly encyclopedic knowledge of dance music in all of its intoxicating varieties.

His pulsating and emotive selections are perfectly complemented by his willingness to take risks and stay outside of trends,  with a constant sense for how to always create the right amount of tension and drama.  It’s safe to say that Ethan seems poised to take over the darker corners of clubland in 2023 and beyond.
